Assemblyman Peter J. Biondi, the Republican Conference Leader, was born in Newark on June 23, 1942 and is a graduate of Union High School. He served in the United States Army Reserve from 1961 to 1967.
From 1994 to 1997, Biondi was a Somerset County freeholder and served terms as deputy director in 1995, and as director in 1996. He was a Hillsborough committeeman from 1983 to 1993, deputy mayor in 1985 and mayor from 1986 to 1993. He also served on the Hillsborough planning board from 1986 to 1998, Hillsborough Capital Planning Committee from 1994 to 1995, Somerset County Planning Board from 1994 to 1996, Somerset County Youth Services Commission from 1996 to 2002, Joint Insurance Fund Special Commissioner in 1996 and Alternate in 1995, and the Industrial Pollution Control Financing Authority in 1997.
An assemblyman since 1998, Biondi has sponsored to fund farmland preservation, create a housing program for seniors and disabled, restrict door-to-door sales by minors, purchase thermal imaging cameras for firefighters, provide flood relief to victims of Hurricane Floyd, increase penalties for driving impaired with a passenger less than 18-years-old.
Biondi has served on a number of community organization boards including the Somerset County Open Space Trust, the Somerset Alliance for the Future and the Industrial Pollution Control Financing Authority. He is a past co-chairman of the Somerset County Youth Services Commission and a past president of the Somerset County Governing Officials Association. He also has volunteered with the Jewish Federation, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and the March of Dimes.
The Assembly term to which he was elected in 2007 is his sixth.
He and his wife Joan married in 1965 and have two children, Peter and Jennifer and two grandchildren, Jason and Matthew.
