Senator Bob Gordon was first elected to represent the 38th Legislative District in the New Jersey State Senate on November 6, 2007. He had previously served as an Assemblyman from the 38th District since 2004.
The 38th District encompasses portions of Bergen County, and includes Cliffside Park, Edgewater, Elmwood Park, Fair Lawn, Fort Lee, Hasbrouck Heights, Little Ferry, Lodi, Paramus, Ridgefield, Saddle Brook, South Hackensack, and Teterboro.
Senator Gordon was born July 3, 1950, in Paterson. He graduated from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., where he majored in political economy and environmental studies. He was admitted to Phi Beta Kappa in his junior year and graduated magna cum laude. He went on to attain a master’s degree from the Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of California at Berkeley, and an M.B.A. degree in finance from the Wharton Business School of the University of Pennsylvania.
Gordon is a founding partner of Emergency Management Advisors, L.L.C., a consulting firm in the field of emergency preparedness and disaster recovery. In addition, he has managed two small businesses, including a family-owned textile mill in Paterson. He spent much of his career working with large management consulting firms, such as C.S.C. Healthcare, a hospital consulting firm.
Gordon served ten years as a councilman in the Borough of Fair Lawn, and was mayor from 1988 to 1991. He also spent ten years on the Fair Lawn Planning Board and ten years as the municipality’s fire commissioner. He served as chairman on the Fair Lawn Board of Ethics from 1999 to 2003.
Senator Gordon’s government experience includes interning at the White House and in the office of Congressman Robert A. Roe, Jr.; working as a research assistant to Charles L. Schultze, a senior economist at the Brookings Institution and former chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisors; and working as an analyst for the U.S. Congressional Budget Office. On the state level, he was an assistant to Governor James J. Florio and wrote a book on state government, Governing New Jersey.
In the Senate, Gordon currently serves as Vice Chair of the Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation Committee, and as a member of the Health, Human Services & Senior Citizens and Environment committees.
