Retailing giant Walmart’s bid to build a store in the five boroughs was kicked up a notch today with the unveiling of a series of ads designed to sway skeptical New Yorkers.
According to a store representative, the ads will run on NY1, News 12, the Lifetime and Nickelodeon channels, and the MSG network. A radio ad is also planned. As you can see below, the ads seem designed to appeal to a female viewership, and boost of the company’s ability to provide jobs–something that is in dispute.
Says store spokesman Steve Restivo: “As we continue to engage with stakeholders across the city to answer questions and share information about the changes we have made as a company, we’re also leveraging social, paid and earned media to better inform the discussion and set the record straight. We look forward to building even more support for the quality jobs and affordable groceries our stores can deliver.”
The City Council is slated to hold another hearing on Walmart tomorrow.
Walmart Free NYC director Stephanie Yazgi sends along the following: “Walmart can try to deceive consumers by spending all the money in the world on glitzy TV ads but they can’t re-write history – Walmart still faces the largest class action lawsuit in U.S. history for gender discrimination, have paid out millions to former workers for terrible work conditions, and they continue to stomp out mom and pop businesses wherever they go.”
