This should be an interesting vote to watch.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn:
“In the coming weeks, the New York City Council will be introducing a resolution in support of the Respect for Marriage Act, which would repeal the Defense of Marriage Act and restore the rights of all lawfully married Americans to receive the benefits of marriage under federal law. While we support this change in the federal law, we must continue our drive to convince the New York State Legislature to give all the rights and responsibilities of marriage to same sex couples in New York. We will not stop working until all New Yorkers have full equality under the law.”
UPDATE: City Council Minority Leader Jimmy Oddo, a Republican from Staten Island and friend of the speaker, said he does not know how he’d vote on the resolution since he has not seen it yet.
UPDATE II: A spokeswoman says this is the first DOMA-related resolution the City Council will consider.
