That was the message Middlesex County GOP Chairman Sam Thompson had for voters in his county.
“They made a mistake in the last sheriff’s election,” said Thompson, reflecting on today’s arrest of former Middlesex County Sheriff Joe Spicuzzo, who as Democratic Party chairman in 2010 backed Mildred Scott to assume the post Spicuzzo held for 30 years.
“The voters of Middlesex County should have elected retired state police captain Keith Hackett; instead they put in a person who was trained by Spicuzzo,” said Thompson.
Scott was Spicuzzo’s undersheriff prior to assuming the oath of office to serve as county sheriff.
“This is just the tip of the iceberg in Middlesex,” said the GOP chairman, an assemblyman from Old Bridge. “You have (former Perth Amboy Mayor) Joe Vas waiting to be sentenced. You are looking at the consequences of Democrats being in control for many years – absolute county control since 1995.”
Last year, Scott and her countywide ticket swept the GOP.
Two freeholder seats are up this year in addition to every seat in the legislature.
“We’re still out there welcoming people to run,” said Thompson.
The Middlesex County Republican Committee will have their screening on March 24th followed by an April 2nd convention.
