Reacting to the news that former state senator John Adler had died, Sen. Paul Sarlo, (D-36), said “It is a very sad day in New Jersey.”
Sarlo said that he served on the Judiciary Committee with Adler for many years, and eventually replaced him as committee chairman.
Sarlo said Adler gave him great tips and advice.
“He was a very compassionate individual,” Sarlo said.
The Senate Budget Committee chairman received word of Adler’s passing just as the committee adjourned a meeting featuring testimony from DEP chairman Bob Martin.
N.J. Sierra Club director Jeff Tittel said Adler was a reliable vote on environmental issues.
Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver said in a release: “No matter what office he held, the Congressman always advocated fiercely for his constituents and those whose voices otherwise wouldn’t have been heard. He was always at the forefront of the key issues of the day, whether it be ethics, education, a clean environment, public health or property tax reform.”
And Senate Republican Leader Tom Kean Jr. said in a release: “John was smart, passionate, energetic, and dedicated throughout his long career in public service. He was a friend to all of us in the Senate and a living reminder that it is possible to disagree with one another without being disagreeable. New Jersey is a better place having been served by John Adler. He will be missed.”
Sen. Diane Allen, (R-7), Edgewater Park, said: “John spent the better part of two decades serving the people of New Jersey with candor and vigor. His intellect and energy was a benefit to his constituents and all who had the honor of serving with him.”
“We lost a great person today,” Sen. President Steve Sweeney said. “John Adler was a remarkable statesman, a dear colleague and a good friend. His commitment to public service and for doing what he believed was right is a testament to the kind of person he was.
“While we mourn his passing, John’s life serves as a shining example to all those who seek to make a difference through public service. My deepest condolences and prayers go out to John’s wife, Shelley, their children, family and friends.”
Gov. Chris Christie said in a release: “Congressman Adler was a fine public servant and a good person. His untimely death is an awful shock. Mary Pat and I will be praying for his wife Shelley and their four sons during this sad and tragic time.”
