Oroho wants ‘double-dipping’ prevention bills advanced

Sen. Steve Oroho, (R-24), Sussex/Hunterdon/Morris, has called for immediate Senate Budget Committee consideration of two bills, S1875 and S346, that would prevent elected officials from collecting both a taxpayer-funded paycheck and payments from the public pension system.

In a letter to Senate Budget and Appropriation Committee Chairman Paul Sarlo today, Oroho wrote,  “I could not agree more with your comments in the Record on April 18th calling for immediate action on legislation that would prohibit the practice of elected officials taking their pension, while continuing to receive their salary in elected office from which they supposedly retired. I respectfully request that S-1875 and S-346 be listed for consideration by the SBA when the Committee is scheduled to meet with other Group 2 Committees on May 12, 2011.’

Both bills were unanimously approved by the Senate’s State Government Committee on Oct. 14.  The bills were then additionally referenced to the Senate Budget Committee by Senate President Steve Sweeney.

“The law as it currently stands invites public officials, some of whom collect six-figure taxpayer paid salaries for their service, to game the system and collect two public checks at the same time,” Oroho said in a release.

The text of Senator Oroho’s letter is as follows:

April 20, 2011

Dear Senator Sarlo:

I could not agree more with your comments in the Record on April 18th calling for immediate action on legislation that would prohibit the practice of elected officials taking their pension, while continuing to receive their salary in elected office from which they supposedly retired.

My legislation, S-1875 and S-346, which would end this practice is presently assigned to the Senate Budget and Appropriations Committee (SBA), having both been unanimously approved by the State Government Committee and then been referenced to SBA by the Senate President on October 14, 2010.

I respectfully request that S-1875 and S-346 be listed for consideration by the SBA when the Committee is scheduled to meet with other Group 2 Committees on May 12, 2011, unless the opportunity presents itself to list the bill for consideration sooner.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.
