Assemblywoman Annette Quijano, (D-20), Union, has joined with 56 other state representatives from throughout the country to co-sign a letter urging members of Congress to oppose drastic cuts to the funding of Title X – a source of funding for family-planning clinics that provide health services to millions of low-income people.
“I am proud to stand up in favor of maintaining funding for Title X,” she said in a release. “Services provided through Title X are essential to families nationwide, especially in this struggling economy. New Jerseyeans already face precipitous cuts to essential community programs, and elimination of Title X would be yet another devastating blow to public assistance for our needy families.”
Title X funds clinics providing basic preventative healthcare and access to contraceptive services, supplies and information to people with low economic means throughout the nation, the assemblywoman said. Such clinics promote reproductive and sexual health education, help to prevent unintended pregnancies as well as provide information needed for healthy family planning.
Although Title X recipients cannot use such funding for abortions, some conservatives in Congress have battled to cut all Title X funding.
