The running mates of state Sen. Brian P. Stack (D-33) of Union City issued a statement today decrying their reconfigured 33rd District, which strips West New York out of the 33rd and repositions it in the 32nd.

“We are deeply disappointed by the configuration of the recently-approved legislative map, as it clearly disrupts the Latino population of northern Hudson County, by removing West New York and Guttenberg from District 33,” said Assemblywoman Caridad Rodriguez (D-33) of West New York and Assemblyman Ruben Ramos (D-33) of Hoboken.

“There are many factors that unite the residents of West New York, Guttenberg and Union City, such as culture, faith-based organizations, social services, funding needs and desired legislative initiatives.  In many instances, these three municipalities function as one cohesive unit. It is tragic that the residents of Guttenberg, West New York and Union City have been stripped of the ability to vote together as a community of similar interests. It is unfortunate that politics played a role in depriving residents of their ability to continue to band together and speak as one common voice.  We mistakenly thought this process would be more about people and less about politics.”

Ramos is running again. Rodriguez is running for commissioner of West New York against a slate backed by the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO).
