The Philadelphia Inquirer reports this morning that 8th Legislative District candidate Carl Lewis says Gov. Chris Christie tried to dissuade Lewis from running hours before he announced his candidacy.
Lewis and his foundation’s director, Chris Walker, said the April 10 conversation occurred after several days of talks in which Christie’s staff threatened to ax funding for an athletic program Lewis wanted to start.
While Christie’s administration dismissed Lewis’ interpretation of the conversations as “silly,” a spokesman acknowledged that the athletic program is all but dead.
Lewis said the governor “was really trying to make it clear he did not want me to run in this race. He said, ‘If you’re going to do this race, we probably don’t have time to do this program.’ “
