Vega gets 30 months

Former Jersey City Council President Mariano Vega was sentenced to 30 months in prison today for accepting $30,000 in bribes in exchange for official action.

Vega, 61, of Jersey City had pleaded guilty count of one count of conspiracy to commit extortion under color of official right.

Vega, who resigned form the council in September, was arrested as part of the corruption scandal that made Solomon Dwek a household name.

The former councilman admitted having accepted bribes from Dwek in exchange for helping the scam artist-turned government witness secure approvals for a development.
