WEST NEW YORK – Tomorrow’s West New York mayoral election pits incumbent Silverio “Sal” Vega against challenger Felix Roque in what represents a local test for powerhouse U.S. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), who’s due for his own re-election bid in 2012.
Not only is Menendez backing Vega for re-election, but the Hudson County Democratic Organization (HCDO) is leaning heavily on that linkage to produce votes for the mayor.
The U.S. senator headlined an early fundraiser for Vega, campaigned with him on Bergenline Avenue, and provides the visuals and audibles at Vega’s prominently situated downtown headquarters.
Voice blaring out of the voice car?
Roque told PolitickerNJ.com at the outset of the contest that Menendez was going to be shocked on Election Day to discover Vega’s unpopularity, comments that prompted allies of the U.S. senator’s to quietly register surprise at what they cited as the doctor’s brashness.
