A bill that would permit advertising on emergency service vehicles and equipment cleared the Assembly Transportation Committee Thursday.

The bill – A3944 and S2787 – clarifies that the commissioner of the state Department of Transportation has the power to authorize revenue-generating sponsors and ads for the Department’s safety service vehicles, equipment and signs.

If adopted, the bill would allow the state to “partner with private entities and realize sponsorship revenues to offset the costs of safety or emergency service patrols.”

According to the bill, other states including Pennsylvania and New York already allow this.

The Senate version has been referred to that chamber’s Transportation Committee.
