The Delaware River and Bay Authority (DRBA) Commissioners approved a new toll schedule for the Delaware Memorial Bridge, increasing the rates effective July 1, 2011.
The higher tolls are expected to generate about $22 million in additional revenue that will fund the agency’s capital improvement program, according to a release from the agency.
The new toll schedule sets the rate for passenger cars and small trucks at $4.00 while commercial vehicles will pay $1.00 more per axle. Discount programs for commuters and frequent travelers will be adjusted for the first time in more than 24 years. The last general toll increase on the span took place on May 1, 2000.
“The effects of age and heavy use mandate substantial capital improvements in order for the DRBA to continue to provide safe and efficient travel across the Delaware Memorial Bridge,” DRBA Chairman Bill Lowe said. “We have a fiduciary responsibility to maintain and improve our transportation network and the new toll rate structure is essential to implement the required infrastructure improvements.”
