Early lease termination bill in case of domestic violence fears is OK’d

The Assembly passed 75-1 bill A2891, which would allow tenants who are victims of domestic violence to terminate a lease before its expiration if written notice is provided that “an imminent threat of serious physical harm” exists if that person remains there.

Assemblyman Michael Patrick Carroll (R -25) of Morris Township, cast the sole no vote.

The bill also states that a landlord who refuses to enter into a rental agreement may be liable to the tenant or applicant in a civil action for damages sustained by the tenant.
