Westchester Congresswoman Nita Lowey emailed her supporters this morning, calling on them to contribute to Kathy Hochul’s campaign in the special election out in New York’s 26th Congressional District.
“Why does a single congressional seat matter?” Lowey wrote. “After all, a Hochul victory wouldn’t change the balance of power in the Congress.”
“But it would send a political shock wave through the country.”
Lowey also said it was a chance for Democrats to go on offense.
“Democrats have been on the defensive too long,” she wrote. “We’ve always occupied the high ground when it comes to the quality of our ideas. Through this special election, we can regain the political high ground as well.”
The Democratic delegation has been supportive of Hochul’s effort–with both senators campaigning in Western New York and several House members holding a New York City fundraiser–while the Republican delegation has been much less involved.

Democrats are on the cusp of a huge upset victory, with enormous national implications.
Next Tuesday, voters in the Buffalo area will fill a vacant congressional seat in a special election. The district is deeply Republican, and the Republican candidate had been heavily favored to win.
Not any more.
Every poll now shows Democrat Kathy Hochul coming on strong, with an outstanding chance to prevail.
Why does a single congressional seat matter? After all, a Hochul victory wouldn’t change the balance of power in the Congress.
But it would send a political shock wave through the country.
Most analysts attribute Hochul’s competitive position to public disgust with Republican plans to dismantle Medicare and abandon the middle class. A Hochul win would be seen – accurately – as a repudiation of the radical and dangerous Republican/Tea Party agenda. And that would strengthen our hand in Congress immeasurably.
So we have to do everything possible to bring Kathy Hochul across the finish line as a winner.

And be assured that Kathy Hochul is a quality candidate – principled, determined and courageous. She will be an outstanding ally in the House of Representatives.

Please do what you can today. And remember the special election is only one week away.
