A New Jersey company has been awarded a $5.1 federal grant for biomass research and development.
Exelus Inc., of Livingston, was awarded the grant to improve the tolerance of crops to drought and salt stress, as well as redesign a process to convert biomass feedstocks into biofuels in an effort to improve cost-competiveness.
The award from the Department of Energy is one of eight research and development projects nationally – a total of $47 million – aimed at supporting the production of biofuels, bioenergy and biobased products.
The grants are part of an overall administration effort to decrease carbon emissions through the use of bio-fuels.
