Challenging state Sen. Jim Whelan (D-2) in one of this year’s marquee match-ups, Assemblyman Vince Polistina (R-2) criticized today’s Supreme Court ruling compelling the Legislature and Gov. Chris Christie to restore $500 million in Abbott School funding.
“Today’s decision by the State Supreme Court did the impossible: It made an already unfair, inequitable and failed education funding plan even worse,” Polistina said in a statement. “The Court arbitrarily decided to force struggling taxpayers to come up with an additional $500 million in order to fund 31 school districts that shamefully fail to provide a world-class education to their students, despite staggering amounts of money from state taxpayers. When will this court learn that simply throwing more money at a problem doesn’t necessarily solve it?
“This flawed decision perpetuates a system that even Supreme Court Special Master Judge Peter Doyne acknowledged does nothing to help disadvantaged students in underperforming districts succeed, while at the same time forcing taxpayers around the state to dig even deeper into their pockets at a time when they can least afford to do it.”
