A bill that is designed to promote greater participation by minority- and women-owned businesses in the state cleared the Assembly Commerce Committee Thursday.

The bill would mandate a uniform fee schedule for registration of small businesses and certification of minority-  and women-owned businesses.

The bill, A920, whose sponsors include Upendra Chivukula, (D-17), Somerset, would require that the state “shall take into consideration business size and promote sensitivity to small business entities that bid on public contracts.”

The proposal also would mandate that the Treasury Department work with the Minority and Women Business Development Council to streamline the bidding procurement process across state departments and agencies in order to promote greater participation of small, minority- and women-owned businesses.
