Zimmer tries to hold onto Hoboken

HOBOKEN – Insiders are reading tomorrow’s muncipal elections as a dipstick on Mayor Dawn Zimmer, who’s a year and a half into her term following the crack-up of golden turned political bad boy Peter Cammarano.

Hobbled in last month’s school board elections, Zimmer, as the self-professed reformer and champ of the mile square’s yuppie population, seeks control of the council, which she lacks by one vote.

Hoping to close ranks on the other side of the equation stands Assemblyman Ruben Ramos, (D-33), who’s trying to position himself as the most obvious 2013 alternative to Zimmer, according to inside sources here.

Councilman Ravi Bhalla – a Zimmer ally – is running against Ramos in next month’s Democratic Primary, where he hopes to at least scuff up the 4th ward’s favorite political son.

Once himself the 4th Ward Councilman, Ramos, when he moved to at-large, backed incumbent 4th Ward Councilman Chris Campos, who lost his 2007 re-election bid to Zimmer. After Zimmer became mayor, Ramos supported Councilman Tim Occhipinti in a special election against Zimmer’s political guru, Councilman Mike Lenz, who had taken over for Zimmer.

Occhipinti won, and now Ramos, who was said to be bunkered in with the numbers this evening in his home ward in preparation for tomorrow and is one of the few people left from the old young crowd that once included Campos and Cammarano – wants to beat Zimmer/Bhalla ally Rami Pinchevsky and help Occhipinti secure a full term. Ramos is also saddled up with other Hoboken long-timers, including Councilwoman Theresa Castellano, Councilman Michael Russo, Councilman Nino Giacchi, and Councilwoman Beth Mason, all running against Zimmer allies.
