Contraband tobacco law signed

TRENTON – A bill setting procedures for destroying contraband tobacco has been signed into law.

Gov. Christie on Wednesday signed S2175/A3102 into law after he had issued a conditional veto in May over concerns, among other things, that it should assess higher civil penalties for possession of contraband cigarettes.

He urged a fine of $250 a carton from the current fine of $25 a carton as a stronger deterrent.
