Duncan Sheik, whom we profiled this week, has postponed several tour dates in order to deal with an alcohol abuse problem, according to a statement from his publicist. Mr. Sheik was scheduled to play New York’s High Line Ballroom tonight, but has cancelled the first week of his tour, from June 8 to June 12. His new album, Covers 80’s, is out today.

“At this time,” the statement sent to us says, “Duncan is currently struggling with an alcohol related addiction and is seeking treatment.” The tour will resume June 20 at Largo in Los Angeles.

The subject of alcohol abuse did not come up when we spent the day with Mr. Sheik last week. When the Observer asked if Mr. Sheik’s people knew anything about the addiction, his publicist told us the news comes as a surprise.
