State Election Law Enforcement Commission (ELEC) records this morning confirm the 20th Legislative District race as the most expensive between May 6 and May 24.
Incumbent state Sen. Ray Lesniak (D-20) and his team raised $174,000 in that period, compared to challenger Jerome Dunn of Hillside and his team, who raised $122,711. In separate, individual accounts, Lesniak raised an additional $77,775 while his ally, Assembly Majority Leader Joe Cryan (D-Union Twp.), raised $74,388.
Much of the race has played out in the courtroom, including a hearing last week in which assignment Judge Karen Cassidy ruled that the challengers could not spend money raised at a May fundraiser for Schools Superintendent Pablo Munoz, roughly approximated as the money ELEC reports the challengers to have raised.
“We’re fighting with our hands tied behind our backs,” said Dunn ally Rafael Fajardo.
But the challengers purchased nearly $10,000 in television advertising just this past week.
