In an emotional testimony, firefighters union President Bill Lavin told lawmakers he hopes they “choke on their words” in three months when they try to stand with emergency services workers on the 10th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks.
Lavin decried what he said was a compromised legislature and predicted come Sept. 11 they would all go out of their way to praise firefighters and police officers for their service. The words would ring hollow, Lavin said.
“I want you to remember then and I want you to choke on those words, those that vote for this,” he said.
Playing on the inclusion of a sunset clause in the legislation, Lavin told the lawmakers the only sunset that would result from the bill would be on the Democratic party.
