A former Deputy Commissioner of the state Department of Corrections has been indicted on bribery and extortion charges for allegedly accepting cash in exchange for official actions.

Lydell B. Sherrer, 51, of Neptune allegedly solicited $52,500 in bribes from five employees or former employees of the corrections department as payment for help in securing jobs and promotions and in one case assisting with an employment discrimination claim brought by an employee against the NJDOC.

If convicted, Sherrer faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, or twice the gross gain on each extortion charge and  up to 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, or twice the gross gain on each bribery charge.

 The Indictment also seeks forfeiture of the $19,000.70 that Sherrer allegedly accepted. Former corrections official indicted
