Public Defender nominee clears Senate Judiciary

Joseph Krakora of Scotch Plains was unanimously approved by the Senate Judiciary today to become Public Defender.

Krakora, assistant deputy public defender, was questioned by senators about how he will run the office in the wake of his predecessor’s accusations that Gov. Christie interfered with the independence of the office.

Among other things, Yvonne Smith Segars had accused Christie of “bullying tactics’’ and “violations of the law,’’ in trying to force her resignation, tactics strongly denied by the governor’s office in February.
