DENVILLE – Following Gov. Chris Christie’s announcement last week that he intends to take the state out of the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative, state Sen. Nicholas Sacco, (D-32), of North Bergen, has signed on as a sponsor for legislative repeal.
Sacco signed on as co-sponsor of S2250, a repeal bill that is more symbolic than anything; Christie said he needs no law to pull out of the Northeastern states’ carbon-reduction alliance.
Sacco joins state Sens. Paul Sarlo, (D-36), of Wood-Ridge, and Jeff Van Drew, (D-1), of Dennis Township, as the only Democrats along with numerous GOP lawmakers in favor of leaving the 10-state program.
In a release from the conservative advocacy group Americans For Prosperity, Sacco said, “This is a tax on electricity bills that hurts New Jersey’s ability to compete and attract jobs. Worse, this is also a tax on those who can least afford it.”
AFP state director Steve Lonegan praised Sacco, who shares a common associate with Lonegan in political consultant Rick Shaftan. “Nothing less than a full and total repeal of the legislation that paved the way for our state’s entry into the failing RGGI scheme is satisfactory,” Lonegan said, “and I commend Sen. Sacco for joining us in this effort to do just that.”
