Senate Budget Committee Chairman Paul Sarlo defended the Democrats’ proposed budget this morning as representing what the Democratic Party is about.
He defended the millionaire’s tax bill that will come up later today before the committee as being separate from the budget but necessary to help the Democrats restore education funding.
He reiterated the Democrats’ platform that their budget represents true shared sacrifice as opposed to the budget proposed by the governor.
“We want to make sure the most vulnerable segments of our society are not left behind,’’ he said.
However, immediately after Sarlo’s comments, Sen. Kevin O’Toole condemned the Democrats’ budget as a pathway back to the years of “profligate spending’’ seen under previous Democratic administrations of Govs. McGreevey and Corzine.
“It’s a battle of wills,’’ he said, that will lead to massive immediate deficits if the Democrats’ budget goes through.
The committee will take up the budget later this afternoon.
