Bill de Blasio Donors Include WFP Foe, and an Old Christine Quinn Challenger [Updated]

Public Advocate Bill de Blasio is getting money from people who have fought against the establishment at City Hall and against his allies in labor.

De Blasio got $100 from attorney Yetta Kurland, who ran against City Council Speaker Christine Quinn in 2009. De Blasio is likely to face in a 2013 Democratic mayoral primary.

And one of Rudy Giuliani’s deputy mayors, Randy Mastro — who has filed a law suit against the campaign arm of the Working Families Party — donated $1,000 to de Blasio. The WFP was a close ally of de Blasio and helped him overcome the better-known Mark Green in a four-way Democratic primary for the public advocate post in 2009.

Mastro’s only other donations this filing period were to Bill Thompson — the 2009 Democratic candidate for mayor who is taking a second run at that seat — and Liz Crowley, the Queens City Councilwoman who is the cousin of the Democratic leader in that borough.

Other interesting donors to de Blasio include CUNY political science professor John Mollenkopf, who donated $1,000, and the editor behind Streetsblog.org, Aaron Naparstek, who donated the same amount.

And, during the Anthony Weiner scandal — May 27 to June 16 — de Blasio raised $104,515. By comparison, Christine Quinn raised $143,298. and John Liu raised $205,675.

Update: Mastro told me “Both Bill’s were clients of mine in the term limits case. I have enormous respect for both of them.” When I asked if this indicates who he may be leaning towards in the mayor’s race, he repeated his answer.
