Lady Gaga and Beyoncé--just add Barbara and Jimmy!

Number-one openings aside, Lady Gaga and Beyoncé–two of the three women that pop critic Sasha Frere-Jones said dominate 2011 pop, with Adele–might have had higher hopes for their new releases. Lady Gaga’s most recent two singles haven’t hit the heights of her “Born This Way,” and Beyoncé is widely acknowledged to have been overshadowed by her onetime bandmate Kelly Rowland. (We thought Dreamgirls was fiction!)

In a summer (still!) ruled by Adele, the divas have to deign to stages smaller than the Grammys: Beyoncé is to, uncharacteristically, appear on The View and Late Night With Jimmy Fallon this Thursday (we remember when she wouldn’t get out of bed for less than a Today concert on Rockefeller Plaza!) while Lady Gaga will perform on The View on August 1 (hope they can move the couches to make a dance floor–she previously appeared on the show in May for a lengthy interview). Anything for iTunes sales!
