“[Gould] sure as hell, obviously, is a pro at marketing,” said OR Books head John Oakes. The Observer broke the news of Emily Gould’s new online bookselling venture, Emily Books, and, while she declined to comment on the record, she has since taken to Twitter to bemoan the project’s difficulty.

“writing wasn’t fulfilling my need for instant gratification, so i decided to open a small business,” Ms. Gould wrote sarcastically today. The roll-out process for Emily Books–the site is in password-protected beta mode right now–is perhaps quicker than the years-long publishing process, but in an uncertain bookselling climate (with one of America’s two largest bookstore chains, once a monster that would kill independent sellers, itself liquidating its stock), it’s surely yet more stressful. Ms. Gould added a hashtag–“#iamfuckingretarded”–that surely OR Books co-founder John Oakes, who’s working with Ms. Gould and called her “a pro at marketing” might contradict.
