Paris’s Balice Hertling gallery is linking up with American writer David Lewis to start a new gallery in Hell’s Kitchen, which will open in Sept. 2011, Art in America‘s Brian Boucher reports. The new gallery will be called Balice Hertling & Lewis.

The gallery’s inaugural location, inside the Film Center building on Ninth Avenue, between 44th and 45th Streets, places it about a mile north of the center of Manhattan’s Chelsea art district, and far afield from the Lower East Side, where many young galleries have opened in recent years.

Balice Hertling & Lewis will open with a one-person show by the New York painter Charles Mayton on Sept. 16.

In Paris, Balice Hertling’s artists include K8 Hardy and Stephen Willats, who both show with Reena Spaulings Fine Art in New York, and Oscar Tuazon, who shows at the West Village’s Maccarone gallery.

Balice Hertling was started by Daniele Balice and Alexander Hertling in the Belleville neighborhood of the French capital in 2007.
