Pet adoption sterilization law approved

A bill, S2923, providing for sterilization of cats and dogs prior to adoption, passed the Senate 36-2.

Sen. Jeff Van Drew, (D-1), Cape May, said the goal of the bill is good. Animal-friendly bills are some of the most difficult, he said, but he said it is important that animals are neutered before adoption.

Previous versions would have allowed for euthanasia of an animal in certain situations, but advocates felt that was not beneficial and it has been removed from the bill.

“We want to make sure animals are not put to sleep when they don’t need to be,’’ he said. Pet adoption sterilization law approved
