Saturday was the 50th anniversary of the completion of the Berlin Wall, and Spiegel Online has marked the occasion with a sobering, 33-photograph history of the Cold War landmark.
The slide show (which begins on August 13, 1961, when East German soldiers finally split Berlin in two, and runs up to the present day) is accompanied by an interactive map (which zooms in on other interesting locations along the 1,393-km Inner German border). Given our own political climate, we welcomed the reminder of just how quickly seemingly insurmountable divisions can sometimes crumble.
