What did Lautenberg say?

Earlier this week we saw again that truth is not always a prerequisite for news going viral when a misguided tweet about Gov. Chris Christie’s alleged political ambitions became national news.

Today, the trend continues.

A youtube video of U.S. Sen. Frank Lautenberg is making the rounds that purports to show the millionaire senator calling for an elimination of the rich.  Sounds kind of far-fetched on its face, considering the guy was just named the 7th richest person in the Senate, also known as the millionaire’s club, but a number of conservative blogs, including Breitbart tv, picked up on it.

The bad news is, that’s not what Lautenberg said.

The video shows a Lautenberg appearance in Belmar where the octogenarian senator is asked about ways to fund beach restoration.  Lautenberg does his best to channel Warren Buffet, who earlier this week called on higher taxes for the rich.

At the conclusion of his answer, Lautenberg tells the questioner “we have to eliminate the waste, we’ve got to eliminate the fraudulent practice…”

If you listen closely, Lautenberg’s quote is pretty clear, but that didn’t seem to stand in the way of a good story.

Here is the video.
