At convention, Dems tap Singleton to replace Conners in LD7 as GOP counters with Allen ad

A joint county committee of South Jersey Democrats Monday night attained the quorum necessary to secure 7th District Assembly candidate Troy Singleton as the replacement for former Assemblyman Jack Conners, (D-7), Singleton told PolitickerNJ.com this morning.

Appointed director of veterans affairs in Camden County, Conners last month relinquished his Assembly seat.

The GOP simultaenously tried to smother Singleton’s second effort at becoming the incumbent assemblyman in time for November’s election by releasing the team’s first television ad of the season.

State Sen. Diane Allen, (R-7), (pictured) and her running mates, Mount Laurel Mayor Jim Keenan and businessman Chris Halgas, highlighted their focus to reduce the size of government, cut taxes, and create jobs.

“Diane Allen, Jim Keenan, and Chris Halgas know what it takes to get New Jersey’s economy back on track and create jobs: lower taxes, a smaller and less costly government, and a focus on improving our business climate,” said campaign manager Adam Bauer.  “They know that only by giving businesses and entrepreneurs the certainty that they will not face higher taxes to support endless government spending will we be able to put New Jersey residents back to work.”

The top-of-the-ticket Allen is the face and voice of the ad.

“Hi, I’m Diane Allen,” she says. “I’m running with Jim Keenan and Chris Halgas. As Mayor of Mount Laurel, Jim Keenan shrunk the size of government and cut administrator salaries.  Chris Halgas is a successful small businessman who knows how to grow our economy. Allen, Keenan, and Halgas. For lower taxes and more jobs.”

Following news this morning that Singleton will assume the Assembly seat, his Republican rivals took aim.

“This late-inning attempt to give Trenton-insider Troy Singleton the appearance of incumbency and trappings of office is the sort of thing we would expect to see from the political machine in Camden, not in Burlington County,” said Halgas.

“Appointing Mr. Singleton to the Assembly seat just two months before the election is a naked campaign ploy,” Keenan added. “Mr. Singleton is the consummate Trenton insider.”
