Here we are the day after Labor Day at the official start of another political season.
PolitickerNJ.com was reminded of the coming “contest” yesterday while walking down Elmora Avenue in Elizabeth and spying a piece of campaign literature on the sidewalk: “Helen Rosales For State Senate District 20, serving Elizabeth, Hillside, Roselle and Union Township.”
The piece is paid for by the Union Conty Republican Committee.
That’s the seat of state Sen. Ray Lesniak (D-20), who weathered an ugly primary and has a distinct upper hand in November’s general election in a district where Democrats overwhelmingly outnumber Republicans.
But don’t tell that to Rosales, whose glossy, four-page piece looks like a serious campaign declaration.
And don’t tell us.
In our gerrymandered conditions, sometimes the appearance of a real contest, the suggestion of legitimate head-to-head politics, is enough cause for celebration.
