Tonight was the 14th district convention to replace Robbinsville Mayor Dave Fried with Robbinsville Councilwoman Sheree McGowan as a GOP Assembly candidate, but Republican committee members could not officially muster a quorum.
Sources said that with a total membership of 196 eligible voting members, the committee needed 99 people for a quorum to equal 50% plus one.
Fewer than 50% tried to ratify McGowan as the swap-in for Fried, who exited the Assembly race last month owing to a health condition.
A source from within the embattled Mercer County Republican Committee said that if tonight’s vote stands, McGowan’s name on the ballot should be challenged.
Middlesex County GOP Chairman Sam Thompson presided over the meeting and this morning said charges that no quorum existed are false.
“There was a quorum and I do not anticipate a challenge,’ Thompson told PolitickerNJ.com.
