“Megan has a great eye for a story and I look forward to seeing her talents contribute to making an Observer that’s faster and more agile,” Ms. Spiers said.

Prior to joining The Observer, Ms. McCarthy was the first dedicated human editor at Techmeme, the algorithm-based technology-focused news aggregator. In March, 2010 she became the founding editor of Mediagazer, a Techmeme spinoff dedicated to aggregating the top media industry news of the day.

Previously she covered Silicon Valley startups for Wired.com and the Gawker Media blog Valleywag.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to join Elizabeth Spiers, Jared Kushner, and the rest of the Observer team,” Ms. McCarthy said. “I’m looking forward to helping to create a vibrant news product with The Observer‘s legendary voice and intelligence.”
