Understated was not a buzzword at the 63rd Primetime Emmy’s last night. The red carpet was swarmed by starlets wearing giant cupcake gowns and mermaid cut frocks. Deep red dresses seem to be this season’s hot item, with Nina Dobrev, Kate WinsletLea Michele, Angela Kinsey, Adrianne Palicki, Kathy Griffin and Sofia Vergara all donning vermillion numbers. Fashion winners included Kelly Osbourne who wowed in a form-fitting burgundy gown, and Modern Family‘s Julie Bowen, whose award for supporting actress in a comedy series perfectly matched her low-cut silver sequined dress . The cast of ABC’s Charlie’s Angels remake need to work on their red-carpet smiles: the threesome looked less-than-enthused as they posed for shots together.

Award winners included Jim Parsons, who successfully defended  his title as best lead actor in a comedy series for the second year running, The Good Wife‘s Julianna Marguiles who took home the Emmy for lead actress in a drama series, and Jon Stewart who won his ninth consecutive Emmy for best variety, music or comedy series.

Notable absences? Alec Baldwin, who appeared at Tony Bennett‘s birthday gala instead with his new girlfriend.
