Mecca resignation may trigger local GOP battle in Clifton

Clifton GOP Chairman Michael Mecca has abruptly resigned, leaving open a chair in one of Passaic County’s key towns.

Mecca’s departure creates the potential for a local turf fight between Passaic County GOP Chairman Scott Rumana and his longtime rival, former County Republican Chairman Peter Murphy.

Mecca is a Murphy ally and lieutenant.

Assuming Rumana and Murphy choose their own version of a Mecca successor, the Clifton GOP committee could become a Little Round Top field position in a bigger intraparty nuclear war.

Sources say Mecca was simply tired of the politics.
