One of the best-ever BBC television series is finally coming to DVD

Happy as we were about the new trailer for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy—the Gary Oldman–Colin Firth remake that opens December 9—we’re happier still to see a DVD reissue of the BBC’s original, small-screen adaptation of John le Carré’s 1974 novel.

The six-part miniseries first aired in 1979, with Alec Guinness in the role of SIS agent George Smiley. Intricate, subtle, and thought-provoking—in all the ways that James Bond films are not—it was the best British television series this side of Dennis Potter. If the season finale of Breaking Bad left a gaping hole in your schedule, these DVDs will hold you for at least a few evenings. (Out October 25.)
