The property tax cap that was passed last June has been generating some controversy as communities struggle to live within a new revenue ceiling.
This afternoon, Gov. Andrew Cuomo sent out a video message making the case for the cap.
We must be smart, cut waste, and we must do more with less. And while it is certainly difficult it is not impossible,” Gov. Cuomo said, adding, that “Local property taxes are simply out of control.”
Mr. Cuomo went on to say that 15 of the highest taxed counties in the nation are all in New York State, and noted that the taxes are going to pay for school systems that continue swell the number of back office staff.
Mr. Cuomo also notes that the 2 percent cap that his administration put in place can be overridden by a super-majority of a county or municipalities voters.
“At the end of the day it is all up to you. The state is not dictating a solution,” he said.
It has been a while since Gov. Cuomo has taken to video to address New Yorkers about a specific legislative issue, evidence, it seems, that the blowback on the property tax cap is growing.
