Essex to ask Christie to tap the brakes regarding UMDNJ/Rutgers merger

TRENTON – Tomorrow, Newark Mayor Cory Booker, Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver, and Essex County Executive Joseph DiVincenzo are holding a press conference to ask the governor to slow down the major higher education merger.

Gov. Chris Christie has announced his intentions to merge the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ) with Rutgers University, another attempt at combining the institutions that some of Christie’s predecessors failed at delivering.

According to two sources, the Essex contingent will relay their concerns, questions, and some recommendations – not in opposition to the merger, but to express their hesitancy to “bull rush” ahead into a situation possibly detrimental to Newark, Essex County, and North Jersey in general. The press conference is Friday morning at Newark City Hall.
