Democratic sources say state Sen. Nick Sacco, (D-32), North Bergen, offered a deal to South Jersey Democratic Leader George Norcross III last night to back Speaker Sheila Oliver, (D-34), East Orange, in exchange for support to make Hudson County Assemblyman Vincent Prieto, (D-32), Secaucus, budget chair.
As part of the deal, Assemblyman Lou Greenwald, (D-6), Voorhees, in South Jersey would be majority leader.
Sacco offered votes (one source said he offered three and a second source said five of six), adding those to five from Essex and a likely 11 from South Jersey.
The powerful North Bergen leader originally wanted his districtmate Prieto to be speaker.
Both sources say Norcross took the Oliver for Prieto deal.
Insurrectionary Democratic caucus members took the deal as a good sign for the overthrow Oliver movement.
Sources say the allies of Assembly Majority Leader Joe Cryan, (D-20), Union, anticipated Sacco lining up more support, including a chunk of Bergen County.
They like the math early for an Oliver alternative.
But it’s still volatile.
