Take a peek behind India’s pink curtain

Pink Saris is a disturbing new film about domestic violence in rural India, and one woman’s struggle for basic human rights. It premieres on HBO2 next Wednesday (November 30) at 8 p.m.

The documentary takes its title from the distinctive saris worn by the members of Sampat Pal’s vigilante group, the Gulabi Gang. You can tell by the trailer that Pal is a force to be reckoned with. But director Kim Longinotto also tells the story of the women Pal has set out to help, and of the caste system that underlies their suffering; it’s a painful but revealing and ultimately fascinating look at a culture, and a value system, that very few outsiders can ever hope to understand.
