Tonight, artist Paula Hayes will debut Land Mind, a new installation in the lobby of Lever House, the iconic modernist office building at the corner of 53rd Street and Park Avenue. Curated by Lever House Art Collection curator Richard Marshall, the work includes a lush garden of tropical vegetation and a huge salt water aquarium that is filled with coral and a variety of sea life.

The project has taken more than 18 months to complete, and included the painstaking fabrication of the tank, a single piece of cast acrylic, by Ovidiu Colea at Colbar Arc Inc. in Long Island City, Queens, over a number of days. “I think it will be a wonder to people in the casting world,” Ms. Hayes told us, when we visited her during the installation of Land Mind last week.

Photographer Jesse David Harris has been on hand throughout the process, documenting the production of the work, and was kind enough to share photographs of the casting of acrylic tank, which are available in the slide show above. These images will be included in Ms. Hayes’s forthcoming monograph from Monacelli Press, which will be available in April of next year.
