More strange news from the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea

A few years ago, Vice magazine’s Shane Smith filed a travel guide to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea. This month, Vice premiered Smith’s impeccably timed seven-part follow-up, from another, totally unknown corner of the Dear Leader’s kingdom.

This time around, Smith takes us not to North Korea but to middle-of-nowhere Siberia, where the North Koreans have established labor camps, staffed with indentured North Korean servants, that might as well be present-day Gulags. The conditions are brutal (some of the workers actually believe that they’re inmates in a North Korean concentration camp) and surreal. Smith’s irreverent style won’t be to everyone’s liking—and we’re not fans of everything Vice does—but this Web report is a must-see.
