According to multiple Albany sources, a plan to allow livery cabs to pick up street hails in the outer boroughs is set for passage.
Lawmakers are gathered at the state Capitol today for a special session in order to pass a tax overhaul plan engineered by Gov. Andrew Cuomo. As late as this morning, it did not appear as is the taxi bill would be taken up.
Passage of the bill would represent a significant victory for Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who has been pushing for a plan that would allow some livery cabs to pick up passengers in the outer boroughs and in the outer reaches of Manhattan. The plan has met with major resistance from taxi medallion owners.
Earlier this week, Gov. Cuomo had been insisting that any deal include a plan for more handicapped accessible taxi cabs.
We will update this story as more information becomes available.
It appears as if we jumped the gun a little too soon. Although it appears as if passage of a bill remains likely, it is unlikely to occur today. Will continue to update as we hear more.
