Thirty-three years ago this month, a relatively unknown singer named Tom Waits appeared on Austin City Limits. Waits’s performance went a long way toward cementing his reputation as something more than a musician’s musician. And now Austin City Limits is rebroadcasting the much-requested, seldom-seen episode. (Tomorrow, December 24; check local listings.)

You’ll hear songs from Waits’s early albums, including his then-new Blue Valentine LP, an early performance of “On the Nickel,” and an unusually festive rendition of “Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis” (which you can preview by clicking on the link below). Our word of warning? Watching this show may inspire nostalgia for the days when smokers still smoked onstage, and on television.
